BPI Learning Lab Series: Leading through Attacks on Democracy

Leading through Attacks on Democracy: Funders’ Role in Defending the Future of Civic Space Around the World
Tuesday 30th June
9:30 am PT | 12:30 pm ET | 6:30 pm CET
This session was part of the Now & Next: BPI Learning Labs, 2026 series on philanthropy’s role in defending democracy, building collective preparedness, and addressing the forces reshaping the conditions for civil society around the world.
Democracy is under sustained, coordinated attack. Across regions, civic space is being narrowed through legal restrictions, financial controls, digital surveillance, and direct repression — and these forces are increasingly transnational, increasingly interconnected, and increasingly ahead of philanthropy’s response.
This conversation explored philanthropy’s role in defending democracy and civic space — and what it would take to move from crisis response to genuine collective preparedness: investing now in the relationships, infrastructure, and coordination needed to protect both over the long term.
