Democracy at Work Fund: Strengthening Democracy from the Grassroots

Events

FORGE and Fundación Avina are excited to announce the next virtual session in our Democracy at Work Fund Conversation Series to introduce funders to the grantee partners from the inaugural round of the Democracy at Work Fund and highlight key lessons from their projects.

Please join us on October 14 at 8:00am ET for the next session in this series, focused on the theme of Strengthening Democracy from the Grassroots. Join us to hear from the following organizations:

Asociación de Trabajadores Agrícolas, Campesinos y Bananeros (ASTAC) – Ecuador
The project aims to increase safety and protection for banana workers in Ecuador, who face historic reprisals and a challenging political context. It seeks to influence industry practices through consumer-targeted campaigns, research, compliance reviews, safety protocols, advocacy visits to Europe and the US, and an emergency fund.

African Content Moderators Union – Kenya
The project aims to support 260 migrant content moderators through organizing activities, mental health support, awareness-raising tasks in Kenya, a rapid response program, and strengthening their leadership committee. These workers face labor abuses, and the project seeks to empower them through collective action and advocacy.

Federación Internacional de Periodistas (FIP) – Argentina
The project seeks to reduce job insecurity and the impacts of the Milei administration’s adjustment programs on media workers in Argentina, through strengthening capacities for mobilization, collective bargaining, safety and protection both physical and digital, and monitoring violence against journalists.

The discussion will illustrate the physical, legal and digital threats faced by workers and strategies used by worker organizations to overcome them.
