Hosted by Prisoners of Conscience
Prisoners of Conscience celebrated the bravery of prisoners of conscience and those who defended and protected human rights. The event featured the annual requalification bursary awards, recognizing the hard work and determination of 11 human rights defenders who re-qualified in fields such as medicine, social work, law, and film studies.
The speakers included:
- Khalid Abdalla
Khalid is a distinguished actor, producer, and activist known for his compelling performances in film, theatre, and television. He gained international acclaim for his role in the hit Netflix series The Crown and for his portrayal of Amir in the film adaptation of The Kite Runner. Beyond his work on screen, Khalid is deeply committed to social and political activism, particularly in advocating for human rights and cultural heritage in the Middle East. - Professor Javaid Rehman
Professor Rehman is the former UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran (2018-2024) and an esteemed legal scholar specializing in international human rights law, Islamic law, and counter-terrorism. He is also a professor of law at Brunel University, London.
Additionally, two past bursary recipients shared their unique journeys and the impact of the bursary grants on their personal and professional development.
