From Commitment to Action: Global and Local Philanthropy for Locally-Led Development

Events Closing Civic Space Funding Ecosystem

Hosts: WINGS, Alianza Socioambiental Fondos del Sur, Giving Tuesday and Global Fund for Community Foundations

The momentum towards shifting power to locally-led development has accelerated in recent years, recognizing the need for more equitable, localized investment and resource deployment in the face of intersecting crises. An increasing number of aid agencies and foundations are committed to bridging the gap with local needs and communities. To support these commitments, international funders are seeking to partner with domestic philanthropy and its support ecosystems. This partnership aims to enhance and harness local assets and cultures of giving, build the channels and conduits for international funding to reach communities and movements at the forefront of interconnected crises such as inequality, climate impacts, and conflicts, and lead to greater sustainability and resilience.

The event will feature a discussion on how the international funding community is transitioning from commitment to action on locally-led development through investment in local philanthropy and giving.

The session will explore the current state of the philanthropy support ecosystem for communities and grassroots movements in Latin America and Africa, present recent research findings, and introduce new partnerships and mechanisms designed to accelerate the growth and effectiveness of local philanthropy and giving.

Participants will hear from representatives of aid agencies and both international and local philanthropies about their approaches to locally-led development and opportunities for collaboration to transition from commitment to action.
