Flawed elections and armed conflict contributed to the 18th year of democratic decline. But by drawing strength from diversity, protecting dissent, and building international coalitions to support their own norms and values, democratic forces can still reverse the long decline in global freedom. The 2024 Freedom in the World report by Freedom House assess the state of political rights and civil liberties in 210 countries and territories.
Freedom House's Freedom in the World 2024 report show that global freedom declined for an 18th consecutive year in 2023. Now, only 20 percent of the world’s population live in free countries.
