Do you have principles? We want to know!

Blogs

Dear Members,

In addition to what funders fund, an important consideration in human rights philanthropy is also how they fund. Do they recognize the power dynamics at play in their grantmaking? Are they funding the communities most affected by injustice and inequality and ensuring they lead the work? Are they transparent and accountable in their decision making? In short, do they adhere to the human rights principles their grantmaking seeks to uphold?

We are excited to share with you that Human Rights Funders Network (HRFN) will collaborate with peer funder networks Ariadne–European Funders for Social Change and Human Rights, and Philanthropy Advancing Women’s Human Rights (PAWHR) to jointly explore these questions to build an understanding across our memberships of what it means to practice grantmaking using a human rights approach. Together we aim to create a set of guiding principles for grantmakers to shift the power in human rights philanthropy and provide meaningful support to people worldwide to claim their rights.

As an important first step, we would like to harness the rich experience and knowledge of our members to inform our “Principles Project.” We would love to know if you use a set of principles to conduct your grantmaking, or have benefited from resources that helped you shape the principles that guide your grantmaking.

  1. Please complete our brief survey for funders by August 30, 2019.
  2. Please send any resources to principlesproject@hrfn.org by August 30, 2019. (If you are a funder you can also send resources through the survey; no need to submit them twice!)

Thanks – we look forward to hearing from you and learning together,

Julie, Annie, Rebecca and Rachel
