Funding Futures Festival

HRFN’s Global Conference

30 November – 2 December 2022

Oaxaca, Mexico

Gather with Human Rights Funders Network (HRFN) to strategize and imagine new possibilities for human rights philanthropy.

Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, we see clearly that all human rights struggles are deeply interwoven. Climate crises have shown us that the resilience of our communities cannot be separated from the survival of our planet. Movements for justice are charting new, intersectional forms of resistance, even in the face of rising authoritarianism, systemic oppression, and extractive economic models that weaken human rights protections and threaten the survival of our shared planet.

There is an urgency for us as funders to meet, to reflect, and to forge new paths to boldly resource movements around the world.

HRFN’s Funding Future Festival is that space.

We invite you to join us as we gather in Oaxaca, Mexico from 30 November – 2 December, inspired by HRFN’s new vision.

At HRFN’s global conference, we will challenge ourselves to craft new, visionary narratives to guide us toward an abundant, resilient global funding ecosystem.

We will spark focused action. Though we do not have specific tracks – precisely because we acknowledge the intersectional nature of this work – key issues such as climate justice, racial and ethnic justice, gender justice, crisis, and closing space are woven throughout. We will partner with Prospera – International Network of Women’s Funds on the final day to deepen this work.

In discovery journeys, you will have the opportunity to advance strategic and collective thinking in order to better resource human rights movements in all of their diversity. We trust you to propose the sessions the field needs today.

As we have always done at HRFN gatherings, we will find common ground – between Global South and Global North, private and public foundations, activists, and funders. Each of us play a vital role in building a more just funding ecosystem.

HRFN’s Funding Futures Festival is open to all HRFN members, as well as to partners (movements, funders, and individuals) dedicated to resourcing human rights movements. Please note that this is a non-solicitation space.

Acknowledgments

As we come together, we ground ourselves in the place and current moment:

🌾 We acknowledge and honor the land of the Zapotec, Mixe and Mixtec, Afro-Mexicans, and other ethnic groups where our conference will take place. We honor the deep-rooted legacy of Indigenous sovereignty and center the defense of land, territories, and our planet’s natural treasures, without which life as we know it cannot continue.

🌾 We recognize that our world is on fire. Our survival is inextricably linked to our care for the planet and for one another. We invite participants to bring an intersectional, climate justice lens. At HRFN, we have struggled with the climate impact of global travel, even as we know the importance of coming together. As a small act, we will dedicate resources to offset our staff’s travel emissions.

🌾 We acknowledge that we are still actively experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognize the many lives lost and the far-reaching and disproportionate impacts of COVID-19, particularly on Black, Indigenous, racialized, poor communities and others already shouldering the burden of inequity. Our health protocols are an attempt to navigate the balance of being in a shared space and caring for one another’s wellness.
